The By-product Concept
MBP provides services of by-product collection to a number of industries. The by-products are mainly in the fats and oil category, but solids and powders are also handled as long as the supplier industry is handling biological rawmaterial. MBP provides focus and expertise and functions as a supply chain for industries that prefer to focus on their core products. You can explore MBP’s services of by-product collection.
MBP specialises in finding optimal markets for by-products. Through extensive product knowledge as well as know-how about the technical requirements for rawmaterial in various sectors and applications, MBP is able to provide our customers with environmentally sustainable as well as cost efficient products and raw material substitutes. MBP markets products in the areas of: biofuel, technical oils, animal feed, fertiliser and anaerobic digestion substrates.
All this summs up to what we like to refer to as a ’Win – Win – Win situation’. A Win for the manufacturer, who gets a better total price for his by-product. A Win for the customer, who gets an alternative raw material at a lower price. And a Win for the environment when a by-product is recycled and put to optimal use. This is the formula which has made MBP a success.
- The MBP Group is owned 100% by employees in the company, a fact that makes MBP a stable partner for customers and suppliers, as competencies are retained in the company and more employees feel MBP to be their company. It is MBP policy that key employees should be offered shares in the company.
- Founder, Partner, CEO and Business Developer: David Magnussen, M.Sc, born 1965. Danish citizen living in Switzerland. David founded the company in 1999 after 7 years in the industry manufacturing animal feed from by-products. It is David’s passion to make the company grow by continously aiming at generating more value for the suppliers and customers who make use of MBP’s services. As a business developer David is spending his time with suppliers world wide in order to understand their business and add value to their by-product streams.
- COO, Sales Director and Partner: Jens Søgaard Jacobsen, M.Sc and MBA, born 1965. Danish citizen living in Switzerland. Jens joined MBP in 2002 and has since worked in most areas in the company before ending up in his current position where he orchestrates sales in key markets. Jens has experience from agriculture, automotive, IT and management consulting industries and uses his insight from these industries to understand the needs of MBP’s customers in different industries and to generate winning value propositions for customers as well as suppliers.
The Board of Directors
The MBP board of directors consists of the two managing partners as well as two non-executive board members:
- Peter Nielsen: Managing director and partner in Fayrefield Foodtech Scandinavia A/S, Denmark. Peter has been on the board of MBP since the start of the company and he contributes with solid knowledge about the dairy and food industry.
- Erlend Waade: CFO in MBP from 2008 - 2012. Erland is a partner in MBP and contributes with a solid financial experience and insight into the omega-3 industry.
The Story of MBP
- MBP was founded in 1999 in Denmark by David Magnussen and Fayrefield Foodtech Scandinavia A/S, a subsidiary of the UK dairy marketing company Fayrefield Foods. The initial focus was to provide solutions of changing dairy by-products into animal feed and other applications for non-human consumption. The first clients included big multinationals like Nestle and Arla Foods.
- A turning point came in 2002 when MBP opened a sister company in the Netherlands focusing mainly on oils and fats for biofuel and technical applications. Already the first year, a new tank terminal for consolidation and cleaning of oils and fats was build in the Dutch harbour of Flushing. The demand for liquid biofuel was high, and relations to customers in Scandinavia, Great Britain as well as in Belgium and the Netherlands were developed. The high demand lead to the company pioneering the sourcing of palm oil from Asia for biofuel. MBP sold the Dutch company off in a management buy-out in 2004 in order to refocus on the original business concept of handling by-products, but this time with more emphasis on liquid oils and fats..
- In the period 2004-2006, MBP expanded geographically in Europe, setting up head quarters in Switzerland, buying the Swedish UCO collector Sveprol AB in Norrköping, buying the closed down Arizona Chemical plant in Greaaker, Norway, as well as setting up a trading office in Great Britain. The international coverage enabled MBP to develop a good understanding of local conditions as well as good relations with suppliers and customers.
- In 2008 MBP was reorganised as Erlend Waade joined David Magnussen and Jens Søgaard Jacobsen in the management and ownership of the company. A new strategy was made identifying key sectors and business concept, a strategy which is still active and reflected in the current website.
- In 2008-2011 MBP has expanded further geographically by setting up new offices in Lithuania, Argentina, Italy, Canada, Indonesia and the Netherlands. This has enabled MBP to service strategic partners on the supply side for their local factories as well as to create direct contact to new suppliers and customers. Scandinavian storage capacity for liquid oils in tanks grew to more than 20.000 m³. In the same period MBP has used resources to reorganise and professionalize internal processes and systems.
- MBP’s business concept and unique services are the key to our past and present success. A two figure growth over many years has allowed MBP to reach a yearly volume of more than 100.000 tons and a 75 MEUR turnover in 2011 with 55 employees. The past, the experience and the expertice of MBP build a strong platform for continued good service for new and old suppliers and customers alike.

Through our membership of the following professional or industrial associations, MBP supports know-how and education within the field of our various activities:
